Migrant workers 'placed in poor quality caravan sites'

People coming to live in the UK are being put into poor-quality caravans in agricultural areas, according to a new report.

The Guardian states that Joanne Rooney's Sheffield City Council report indicates that one per cent of migrants entering Britain are given council or housing association accommodation.

In addition, the report states that those coming into the UK are often placed on mobile home sites by their employers.

A third of migrant workers live in such accommodation and half described it as poor or very poor.

Living in a motor home could prove to be a particularly expensive way to live, particularly if the workers cannot afford to take out a caravan insurance policy.

One in every 15 homes in the UK is occupied by a migrant, according to figures from the government's Migration Impact Forum.

Ms Rooney states that the government needs to clearly plan its handling of migrant workers and their accommodation once they arrive in the UK.

She said: "A coordinated response is critical to set out clearly facts on migration and respond effectively to worries created by migration such as access to housing."
