More people 'holidaying in caravans'

There has been an increase in the number of people taking caravan holidays in the UK, according to new research.

According to the Caravan Club, half of all people in the UK have taken a holiday in a caravan at some stage, while 19 per cent of holidays taken are in such conditions.

Membership of the group grew as it welcomed 57,000 more applications over the course of 2006.

With more people showing an interest in caravans, it may be that there is a similar increase in those looking to take out caravan insurance.

The Caravan Club added that young people and families are taking up a motor home vacation and changing the idea that it is mainly for older people.

Head of public relations for the group Nikki Nichol comments that the pursuit is ideal for those who want to relax and enjoy the great outdoors.

"It is a popular trend and I think it will continue to be so because there is a sense of freedom with it," said the official.

The Caravan Club was founded in 1907 and now boasts close to one million members across the UK and Ireland.
