Industry 'more aware' of insurance fraud

The insurance industry is better-equipped to deal with fraudulent insurance claims than it has been in the past, according to a sector body.

Questions will be asked of all people who are suspected to have made dodgy requests to companies, said British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) spokesperson Graeme Trudgill.

He comments that a number of consumers in the UK try to "cheat the system" but states that the Insurance Fraud Bureau has been set up to combat them.

It may be that one of the areas in which people attempt to take advantage of the industry is caravan insurance, with fraudsters making claims about events that did not occur or items they say have been stolen when they did not own them at all.

Mr Trudgill states that the industry is now adjusted to crack down on these criminals and "protect the innocent".

"Unfortunately, there will always be people out there who do try and cheat the system but I think that we are becoming more aware, more alert, and we'll be more able to respond to it," he said.

This comes as Clarion Events has announced that it will be holding the International Caravan & Motorhome show at the Birmingham NEC until 2010.
