Tourism industry 'is concerned about environment'

Tourist bodies across the industry have a deep concern when it comes to the environment, a sector body states.

Holiday firms are worried about the effect the sector is having on the environment, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

As a result, it may be that more caravan holidays are encouraged, as these do not involve air travel and would produce a smaller carbon footprint.

But this in turn may increase the cost of caravan insurance, as cover firms could view a greater amount of vehicles indicative of a bigger risk of damage.

Abta spokesperson Sean Tipton said that concern for the environment makes "good economic sense" as it keeps sites sustainable.

He said: "If you look at the kind of places customers are sent to, there's a very simple reason they became popular in the first place - they are very beautiful places."

This comes as research from TNS Online Omnibus has stated that most people would not change their travel plans in order to be greener.

According to a poll from the group, 65 per cent of people would not rearrange their holiday plans in order to accommodate environmental issues.
