Leaving valuables in caravan 'risks theft'

Caravan insurance customers are being urged to remove valuable items from their caravans to reduce the risk of theft.

One of the most recent incidents of caravan crime saw burglars break into a caravan parked in the driveway of a Mablethorpe home, reports the Skegness Standard.

The offenders made their getaway with boating items, a radio and sat-nav equipment after prising open the door of the caravan.

Police have asked witnesses to come forward in order to shed light on the incident that occurred between Friday evening around 18:00 GMT and 07:00 GMT on Saturday March 1st.

Various police forces have warned caravan insurance customers and other motorists to ensure they take proper precautions to protect their property from criminals.

Kent Police's crime reduction officer, Julie Argent, said that motorists should realise that as the popularity of sat-navs increases among consumers, criminals also become more interested in getting their hands on the technology.

She suggested taking a sat-nav system out of vehicles, along with its support cradle and suction pads.

"Remember to wipe away any suction pad marks left on the windscreen or dashboard as thieves will be on the look out for these," Ms Argent commented.

Hiding valuables in the vehicle, such as in the glove compartment, is also not advisable, the officer warned.

"Don't leave the equipment in the glove compartment - thieves will usually check there first," she concluded.
