Bottoming out 'causing accidents'

Caravan insurance customers and other motorists should take precautions to ensure their vehicles' rear suspension does not bottom out.

This is according to Car Parts Direct, who warned that serious road accidents can occur as a result.

The Midlands-based supplier warned that a rear suspension that has bottomed out could lead to a loss of steering control and ineffective braking, among other things.

A particular risk is run by those who tow caravans or trailers, vehicles with low suspension and tradesmen's vans, Car Parts Direct said.

Mark Cornwall of the supplier said there are DIY solutions available to caravan insurance customers and other motorists to protect their vehicles' rear suspensions.

"Drivers can now reduce the risk of damaging their vehicle and keep the vehicle level when carrying heavy loads," he said, referring to a new range of products that improve suspension.

Car Parts Direct notes that a "cost-effective solution" is the fitting of rubber inserts between the rear coil springs.

Among the towing tips offered to caravan insurance customers and other road users by the Volvo Club is the need to ensure the fully laden weight of an unbraked trailer should not exceed 750kg, or half the vehicle's kerb weight if that is lighter.
