Jail for caravan tower

A man who towed a caravan without car or caravan insurance has been sentenced to jail and banned from driving for three years.

James Connors, 32, of East Grange Road, Belle Isle in Leeds was caught towing a caravan at 10mph on the M1 on December 5th.

He has never passed a driving test and was driving with three young passengers without seatbelts as well as six dogs in his van.

Connors claimed he was under the impression police, who were trying to stop him, were actually escorting him along the motorway.

He admitted to charges of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance in Nottingham magistrates' court.

District judge Morris Cooper said Connors' argument that he thought police were escorting him was unacceptable.

He added that Connors' driving behaviour on December 5th created a "very serious risk" that could have caused a "multiple pile-up" on the M1.

The judge said: "Towing a caravan is extremely dangerous in your hands."

An appeal against the 90-day jail sentence and three-year driving ban has been lodged by Connors.

The Volvo Club highlights that caravan insurance customers and other vehicles towing are allowed a maximum speed of 60mph on motorways and dual carriageways in the UK.

On other types of roads, where there is no lower speed limit in force, a maximum speed of 50mph applies.
