Caravan-towers given tips by road safety body
People looking to tow their caravans this summer have been advised on how best to stay safe by a road safety organisation.
TyreSafe has reminded motorists that the minimum tyre tread depth required when travelling on UK roads is 1.6mm throughout the central 75 per cent of the wheel.
However, the organisation pointed out that those heading into Europe should be made aware that regulations on the continent require the 1.6mm depth to be met across the entire tread.
Furthermore, people intending to keep their caravan insurance policies intact should check for cracking on the wheel, as well as imbedded objects and cuts. Tyre pressure should also be assessed.
But if a motor home owner is using tyres over five years old, they should look to replace them, while wheels older than seven years should not be used at all.
"Many drivers are not aware of the dangers related to the inadequate maintenance and preparation of their vehicles, with incorrect or damaged tyres in particular, presenting a major risk to their safety," commented TyreSafe.
This follows the Fit to Tow DVD on caravan safety, released by the Highways Agency and featuring television personality Carol Smillie.
